This course covers all the essential knowledge and practice to start developing methods and analysing samples using static or dynamic headspace. We cover the theory of the technique plus method development, optimisation, maintenance and troubleshooting by mixing presentations with lab exercises. This hands-on courses is 50% theory and 50% practical in a lab environment, with a small group size of a maximum of 4 delegates.
This one-day course is Day 1 of the Hands-on Sample Preparation course.
We explain the fundamental theory of both static and dynamic headspace sampling by introducing definitions, equilibrium and the partition coefficient (K) and reviewing processes to improve the sensitivity. We then put theory into practice setting up various experiments to investigate the effect of differnt parameters such as phase ratios, temperature and pH on sensitivity. We use different types of HS instrumentation & address setting up the instrumentation on a syringe-based HS system. We also stress the importance of regular maintenance of the HS technique and guidelines for troubleshooting of the system.
At the end of the course you will have gained both knowledge and experience of using the technique with a GC or GC-MS to analyse samples, optimise method parameters and perform instrument set-up, maintenance and troubleshooting.
