The Mid-Wales Local Section Trust covers Ceredigion and the Radnor and Montgomery districts of the County of Powys.
Its predominantly rural area of some 2000 square miles is sparsely populated and, lacking any focus of academic or industrial chemistry, Mid-Wales has one of the smallest section memberships in the UK.
Although their dedicated departments have long disappeared from the local university, there are sufficient chemists and biochemists in the Aberystwyth area to make a significant contribution to the section’s activities. These are largely educational, giving careers advice, running the local Top-of-the-Bench competition and collaborating with the West Wales Association of Young Scientists at the secondary level, and providing lectures for primary schools.
For the community as a whole, a programme of lectures emphasises the wide significance of chemistry and the way it interfaces with related subject areas. Other activities include occasional visits by members and their guests to places of interest both within and beyond the local section’s boundaries.
